We have a number of other groups:
BOOK GROUP "The Manchester Man" Mrs G.L. Banks - historical novel set in Manchester city centre between 1800 and about 1830 - orphaned boy grows up into a man of wealth and influence - good description of Manchester and the 'outlying areas' - upmarket Fllowfield, Cheetham Hill and Ardwick Green. We followed this up by visiting Chethams Library and seeing the manuscripts of Mrs Banks' novel as well as maps and pictures of the area in the early 19th century. Other novels - "The Outcast" by S. Jones, (dysfunctional family life in early 1950s) "The Boy with the Cuckoo Clock Heart" by M. Malzieu ('fairy story') "Wolf Hall" by H. Mantel (fictionalised life of Thomas Cromwell in the early part of Henry's reign). We then opted out of Library books for a couple of months - in March we all chose our own novels to talk about - "Smokescreen" by D. Francis, "Never Let Me Go" by Ishiguro, "The King's General" by D. Du Maurier, "Rose" by M. Cruzsmith and "Cider with Rosie" by L. Lee. In April we selected our own narrative poem - "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", "Lady of Chalot", "Abu Ben Adam" and "London Snow". MUSIC AND MOVEMENT Come on - a New Year - get those joints working!! It's not energetic but will help to keep you mobile. Due to nasty wintry conditions our numbers attending have been depleted at times this year but are now beginning to increase again. Our teacher Angela is excellent, always stressing "just do what YOU feel capable of" --- and we have a nice cup of tea or coffee and a chat afterwards to round it off. New members are always welcome. Contact: Brenda Campbell on 0161 430 5676.
OCCASIONAL DINERS When there are five Thursdays in a month the fifth Thursday sees the Occasional Diners making their way to a wonderful venue for lunch. In the past this has included Indian cuisine, Chinese, Spanish, English - Fish and Chips, Carvery at the Britannia Hotel, Afternoon Tea at Harvey Nichols and others. Last of all, we have just led the singing at Woodley Methodist Church for the Womens World Day of Prayer. If you would like to join us, we meet at Romiley Community Centre, Romiley Forum every Tuesday at 1.30 p.m. You will be very welcome. Contact: Ellen Stewart on 0161 430 3963
WALKERS Join us on Wednesdays and enjoy lovely countryside walks. If we are going on a local walk we meet at the Forum at 9.30 a.m. or we catch a bus or train shortly after 9.30. We usually take a packed lunch with us, but occasionally have lunch in a cafe or Public House. Our walks are not often more than 6 miles and we walk at a fairly leisurely pace, but in this area there are not many flat walks and if our walk is strenuous we also have a short morning walk of abour 3 miles. Our present programme goes up to the end of the year and if you would like a copy of the programme contact Val Bradshaw on 0161 427 7324 or at one of our monthly Ladies Group meetings.
OUTINGS There are usually at least two coach outings each year. In the last two years we have visited Hardwick Hall, Llandudno, Belvoir Castle, Chatsworth Hall & Hoghton Tower. This coming August we are visiting Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire. On the way home we will call for a carvery meal.
